The seed of Smethurst Ministries was planted in 1972 when God called David Smethurst and his wife Margurita into ministry. This calling has taken them into churches, schools, youth groups, colleges, convents, military bases, prisons etc across the world including Africa, Australia, USA, Britain, Ireland, Latvia and other ex Soviet countries, Norway, Yugoslavia, Singapore, Malaysia, Iceland…

Smethurst Ministries (an interdenominational ministry) has a multipurpose in equipping Christians to be more vibrant witnesses for Christ – “Equipped to Go….into the Harvest”. We also minister into areas of need with seminars such as: “Healing the Home” (building bridges to effect healing in the family and also to bring unbelieving relatives to Jesus).

2 Corinthians 5:14-20 informs every Christian that they have a ministry. God has given us a ministry of reconciliation (verse 18) and He’s committed to us (verse 19) the word of reconciliation. Verse 20 says, we are ambassadors for Christ. We are here in His place representing Him before needy man, urging and begging him to be reconciled to God through Jesus Christ.

If you’ve ever prayed, “God, I’m serious about serving You, please use me in your service” God has taken you seriously and that prayer should be followed by action. God has given us our marching orders; in Mark 16:15 Jesus instructed us, “Go into all the world (all your world) and preach the gospel to every person”. Note that this is a command from the Lord Jesus, it is not optional. The challenge is to rouse ourselves from the attitude that winning people to Christ is a week-end hobby in which we might or might not participate. Endeavouring to bring people to Christ is a matter of life and death – eternal life and death. We’ve got to take it seriously. If God took the salvation of the lost so seriously that He gave heaven’s best how dare we take it lightly and give less than our best in winning people to Jesus.

Jesus said in Matthew 10:32, “If you confess me before men I will confess you before My Father in heaven”. One of the highest forms of gratitude we can show the Lord Jesus is to confess to others how extremely kind and generous He has been to us in dying and rising again to save us.

Jesus wants us all to be His witnesses,

In much demand is the series on Prophetic Evangelism – how to use the Gifts of the Holy Spirit in winning the people to Christ, such as gifts of prophecy, words of knowledge, words of wisdom, gifts of healings and the working of miracles to the unchurched. The world we live in is full of cynics and skeptics who are tired of just hearing words and more words. They want to see the power of God in action that we say we have in us, from the Holy Spirit. It’s time we delivered that power to them. It’s amazing how willing the Holy Spirit is to minister His gifts to needy non-believers and touch and heal them. It never ceases to amaze me how non-believers, in many instances, get healed quicker than believers. I’ve seen whole families come to Christ as a result of a needy family member being healed.
It’s very exciting to know how to be sensitive to the Holy Spirit’s prompting to minister in the Gifts of the Spirit to strangers we meet along life’s way. I’ve seen many strangers on airplanes, trains and public transport come to Jesus when I’ve given them a word of prophecy or a word of knowledge relating to a personal or family issue, that could not have been known outside their personal sphere. Many have realized that this was from God and have given their hearts to the Lord as a result.

The seminars “Prophetic Evangelism – reaching the unchurched with the Gifts of the Holy Spirit” normally take this pattern……

1. Getting to know the Holy Spirit and how to be sensitive and obedient to His moving and prompting

2. The Gifts of the Holy Spirit – using them to win the lost we live in a world of very cynical and skeptical people who are tired of just hearing words and poor excuses – the power of God through the Gifts arrests them very convincingly for Christ.

3. Winning your family & friends with the Gifts of the Spirit.
(Words of Knowledge, Gifts of Prophecy & Words of Wisdom to arrest non believers around us – sharing Christ effectively with our family and friends is one of the weakest areas of our witness. It’s shouldn’t be. Those close to us can be won very easily if we do it right.

4. Using the Gifts to bring Healing & Miracles to the unchurched
(this is amazing as God’s kindness and compassion draws people to a faith in Him)

Further seminars are conducted in many needy areas, deal with hurting homes, broken marriages and problem teenagers and children. These seminars and counseling activities are conducted in conjunction with local community groups, churches, youth centers and business groups who are concerned with the well being of their communities. The cost of attending these seminars is free as many of the families and individuals are in dire financial straits and could not afford the costs.

Counseling is conducted by David and Margurita Smethurst and others in the local areas who are ordained ministers and qualified counselors. In addition counseling is conducted for people struggling with addictions to alcohol, drugs and other related problems. Teenagers are counseled at their or their parent’s request.

Counseling materials, in the form of books, CDs ad DVDs, are given away to many needy individuals and hurting families for ongoing support and encouragement. Those being counseled are referred to local church leaders and qualified counselors for ongoing work in their lives and families.

It’s been very rewarding to see individuals and families rise up out of dire circumstances and despair to take advantage of the help and apply what they have learned. Many have risen in dignity to become very useful members of society. It is been tremendous to see broken pieces of shattered lives and families put back together again. They are normally a great object lesson to others in the same context of need, and have been used to help others around them. Over 40 years of operation we have seen many genuinely helped and restored.
